Josh Groban

The Grammy-nominated, twenty-something, pop-classical phenomenon's fourth studio album is an expertly accomplished entry to the holiday marketplace. Noël tackles the familiar sounds of holiday music with a charmingly eclectic array of guest vocalists and a wide range of material. The songs range from the sacred to the secular, while Groban--buoyed in spots by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra--soars in his duets with Brian McKnight, Faith Hill, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There's even a song with a gospel choir directed by Kirk Franklin. Produced yet again by crossover maestro David Foster, the arrangements never overwhelm the songs. Groban's smooth and supple vocals can be hard to categorize--seeing how his range is somewhere in-between a high baritone and a low tenor--but he always finds and emphasizes the emotional core of these songs. And whether they have origins in pop or classical music seems not to matter. The addition of messages from troops stationed in Iraq on top of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is undeniably heart-wrenching, while the album's highlight is its most spare song, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," which finds Groban alone at his piano, sounding very much like some kind of angel.Josh Groban

Fearless

Why we care: There's never been a more cynical time in pop music, at least from a critic's point of view. Not only do we assume most Top 40 tartlets aren't doing their own singing -- we've accepted it, grading on cultural impact, art and integrity be damned. The 18-year-old Swift's pop-country pirouettes have all the weight of a dandelion crown, but she can sing and write a bit and flash a genuine smile. Ultimately, though, the Pennsylvania gal is one of the hottest things in music more for what she's not. Why we like it: With feet-on-dashboard beats and innocent guitar strums, Swift's sophomore helping of country fluff (see first single Love Story) details the kind of drama and heartbreak crescendo that can devastate a kid...at least until after recess. Her voice is strong when it has to be, wispy and lilty in those quiet times. She knows catchy, that's for sure.

Reminds us of: The star pupil at Faith Hill's Camp for Exceptional Blonds

Twilight

Twilight is an action packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a human. Bella Swan has always been a little bit different and when her mother sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen, a boy unlike any she's ever met. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Like all vampires, he's immortal. But he doesn't have fangs, and he doesn't drink human blood. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for: a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will Edward and Bella do when James, Laurent and Victoria, the Cullens' mortal vampire enemies, come to town, looking for her? This is the first movie from the book series from author Stephanie Meyer. The series are currently some of the most popular books written for young adults, with sales exceeding 50 million copies worldwide since the Twilight debut in 2004 and over 7.7 million copies sold in the U.S. alone. The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Apple iTunes
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is a Danish group based around the songwriting and vocal duo of Mette Lindberg and Lars Iversen. The group creates a nouveau vision of soul music that takes some of the dustier corners of early funk and soul rhythms and puts them in an indie-pop context. It's an effective mixture that recallst eh pop euphoria of teh Avalanches with the red-hot productions of mark Ronson. This EP gives a sample of the group's retro-futuristic soul-pop and includes the title track, which you may have heard in the ads for iPod Touch. Catch Around the Bend - EP for only $3.96!

Kenny Chesney

Apple iTunes

In the early '90s, Kenny Chesney was wide-eyed Tennessee boy in a big hat with his shirt tucked in. 1995's All I Need to Know changed that a bit thanks to the success of the track, "Fall in Love" — a twangy, pop gem that had all teh catchiness and grit you could hope for. Not hard country, but sweet country rock with more than a hint of polish amidst the grime. new album for only $9.99!

Usher "Hush"

Apple iTunes

Despite all the bling and the flashy videos seen today, it's easy to forget that soul singers often used their voices to comment on social issues (think Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Arethra Franklin, Sam Cooke). Usher continues this tradition with his new single, "Hush." Over a subtle acoustic guitar lick and a spare drum bed, Usher wonders who will stand up for those left behind during times of war and economic uncertainty. It's a departure for Usher, one that reveals another dimension of the multiplatinum star. Listen to this single

Bo Diddley Dies June 2nd

Bo Diddley (December 301928 – June 22008) was an American rock and roll singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Often cited as a key figure in the transition from blues to rock and roll, he introduced more insistent, driving rhythms and a hard-edged guitar sound. He was also known for his characteristic rectangular guitar.

Born in McCombMississippi as Ellas Otha Bates,[1] he was adopted and raised by his mother's cousin, Gussie McDaniel, whose surname he assumed, becoming Ellas McDaniel. The family moved to Chicago when he was seven.[2] He took violin lessons as a youth, but was inspired to become a guitarist after seeing John Lee Hooker.

He worked as a carpenter and mechanic, but also began a musical career playing on street corners with friends, including Jerome Green[3] (c. 1934–1973), as a band called the Hipsters (later the Langley Avenue Jive Cats). In 1951, he landed a regular spot at the 708 Club on Chicago's South Side, with a repertoire influenced by Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker, andMuddy Waters. He adopted the stage name, Bo Diddley, which is probably a southern blackslang phrase meaning "nothing at all", as in "he ain't bo diddley". Another source says it was his nickname as a teenage Golden Gloves boxer. The nickname is also linked to the diddley bow, a two-stringed instrument that was used in the south by black musicians working in the fields.

In late 1954, he teamed up with harmonica player Billy Boy Arnolddrummer Clifton James and bass player Roosevelt Jackson, and recordeddemos of "I'm A Man" and "Bo Diddley". They re-recorded the songs at Chess Studios with a backing ensemble comprising Otis Spann(piano), Lester Davenport (harmonica), Frank Kirkland (drums) and Jerome Green (maracas). The record was released in March 1955, and theA-side, "Bo Diddley", became a #1 R&B hit.
